Striving For Knowledge-Episode Nine

 THE JOURNEY TO BERLIN
Two days later, it was now time to travel to with Mr.Olu to Berlin,Germany. Mr.Olu`s plan was to take him along, so that he would be conversant with the routes and the games.
Mr. Olu went to an African restaurant; he bought a plate of draw soup that aided him in swallowing about 200 wraps of cocaine into his stomach. The other kilos of cocaine were packaged and concealed in a way that even the smartest cops in the world would not suspect.
They took a train to Berlin and they arrived late in the night at hotel Berlin. Hotel Berlin which was located at Lutzowplatz;Hotel Berlin was the third largest four-star hotel in the capital. Both of them lodged in the hotel. He made a phone callwith a drug retailer who was willing to buy the drugs.
“Hello Chinedu, how far?”Olu greeted on the phone.
“Guy,I dey oh. A strange voice answered on the phone.
“The birds don fly from Holy land come Hitler. The birds”dem lodge for the usual nest shall.
“Wetin be the name of the second bird sef?” Chinedu asked.
   “Him name na Femi.”
“Hope the bird don scatter the dust?”Chinedu inquired.
“Yes na, everythingdon set.” Olu answered.
“Okay, nowahala,we  go  run am as usual.” Chinedu concluded.
“Okay,later”
He hung the call and sipped a glass of Hennessey while Femi was busy praying for a successful deal.
“Come on! Stop wasting your time. God does not answer the prayers of drug pushers,” Olu mocked him. Femi thought about Olu`s statement for some time and then he stopped praying.
“I am sorry about what I said,” apologized Mr. Olu.
  “No worries boss,” saidFemi.
“I thought about your preaching lastnight. No one ever has the guts to reprimand me in such manner. Therefore, I have made up my mind to quit after this deal.”
“What! You mean no more drug deals?”
“Yes, I am calling out after this deal. I already made enough money that will last me for years. I just want to live the good life and get married.” He nodded his head in a remorseful way.
“Immediately after this deal, I am going to give you enough money to travel back to Nigeria for your marriage with Rita.” He sincerely promised.
Femi thanked him and gave him a warm friendly hug.
However, Olu claimed that he trusted Chinedu, but in drug business, there was nothing like trust. Anybody could betray you at any time, even your own friend. At midnight, he had hidden about 600 grams of cocaine in a special location at hotel Berlin. There were CCTV cameras installed on lobbies, hallway, rooms etc. Therefore, they had to be very discreet.
Normally Mr. Olu`s buyers would pick up the goods from where they hide it and cook the white dust to ascertain the quality and they would hide the money in the same location that they had picked up the goods. They would call to inform him that the stuff was good. The buyers already knew that 100 grams of cocaine would sell for €30,000 Euros. This means that they would buy 600grams of cocaine for €180,000 Euros. That was a very huge sum of money when converted to Nigeriacurrency. Femi was obviously going to be super rich after this deal. The buyers would send the goods back, if they do not like it. However, this time was different; Chinedu and his partners became greedy because the quantity and quality of the goods was high.
They did not call Mr.Olu this time, they stole the cocaine and went with their money. Mr. Olu had called Chinedu phone numbers severally but none of it was reachable. He kept dialing it while he sent Femi to get some coffee downstairs.
As Femi walked out from the coffee shop, he was surprised to see some police officers hanging around. Some of them were already inside their hotel room. Chinedu had called to inform the police officers in an anonymous way.
Immediately they saw Femi, they took off after him. Some of them entered their cars and pursued him.
Femi threw the coffee cups away and he ran as fast as he could, butFemiwas not a good runner.
While running, he thought about his darling Rita. Another man would marry her, if he they caught him and locked him inside a German prison for three years. Though, their prison would not be worst as that of Nigeria`s prisons but what about his education. It was certain that they must have arrested Mr. Olu by now. Just like a millipede, Femi could not run fast, so he had to think of a way to escape this danger just the same way a millipede would fold itself when it senses dangers.
He once heard of news about an ex-governor who dressed like a woman in order to escape arrest from the hands of London metropolitan police officers. He had to replicate that now to avoid confinement. He sneaked into a beauty salon, where he paid the beautician to dress him like a woman. He was not trying to dress like a woman because he looted huge sum of money. He was trying to dress like a woman because every of his instinct said so. Thisis called the survival instinct. The male beautician who was only concerned about making his money did a perfect job on him.
He came out of the beauty salon in a different shape and style. There were sirens blaring throughout the metropolitan city. They had increased security everywhere and mounted some police officers on trains and borders that led to Holland.
His only option now was to head towards Italy to seek asylum since he had no residential permit of any European countries. He had some money with him, which was given to him by Mr. Olu.
He boarded a taxi to a train station. Police officerswere present even at the train station. He had to wait back and later he sneaked into a cargo train. While travelling to Italy, he thought about his home country. Thiswould not have happened if the government of Nigeria had repositioned the educational sector to meet international standard. He would not have abandoned his admission to pursue a western education, if the public educational institutions back home were top-notch. He then swore that one day; he is going build many classical libraries and universities around his country.

         CHAPTER TEN

 LIFE INVENICE, ITALY
Femidisembarked in Venice, a city in the northeastern Italy. The weather was calm and friendly. He discovered that Venice was a city on waters as there were no cars or roadways just canals and boats. Venice, Rome, and Amsterdam are most interesting and beautiful places in the world. Femi had practically conquered some of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Femi had boarded a cargo train that was conveying some sort of poisonous gases. He had managed to escape from paying for the train ticket and he had also escaped from the German police officers but there was a problem. The air he had inhaled contained one of those poisonous gases. His eyes became sore and he felt dizzy. Howbeit, He did not know what happened next. He only heard the whistling sound of a train far ahead as he collapsed inside a boat, which he had boarded.

Femi was now conscious of the environment. He slowly turned his neck to look around but he saw himself in a strange house. It was a bedroom nicely furnished. He saw some strange pictures hung on the wall.
“Grandpa!Grandma! He is awake,” shouted a female youngster about the age of 12 years. Her name was Emily; she also had a sister called Diana.
Two French-Italian old chaps entered the room, together with Diana.
This family had shown him care by taking him home and they treated him free of charge since the grandma was a nurse.
Ciao, come stai” Emily greeted in Italian but Femi did not respond because the language was strange to him.
“Maybe he is still weak. Let us give him some time to rest,” Grandpa suggested.
“Emily e Diana, venite a unirsi a me in cucinaora(Emily and Diana, come over to the kitchen now),”Grandma commanded in Italian.
They exited the room one after the other. The family of Maverick was very rich. Maverick was the name of Emily and Diana`s Grandpa. They own the Maverick fashion and boutiques located in Venice and many other branches around Europe. They allowed Femi to stay with them until hewas fully recovered. They never bothered to question him about his identity. Femi could swore that in his entire life, he had never seen people as kind as the Maverick family. They treated him like one of their own sons. Emily and Diana were so much in love with Femi because he was the playful type−this was what Rita hates about his personality. He would sing, dance and played with kids. Within two weeks, Femi had successfully won their hearts that they can hardly do without him. They would visit the cinema and visit the sport viewing Centre together. Sometimes they would go on a boat cruise around the snake canals of Venice. They told Femi about their mother but they usually say little about their father.
One day, a rich woman called Christine;whom was the mother of Emily and Diana came from Holland to visit her kids and her grandparents. She was a woman with a big heart and her kindness, illuminated, and brought light to Femi.Christine was once married but the marriage did not work out. She was divorced after seven years of marriage. She had these wonderful female kids for ex-husband. Her ex-husband whom she claimed got married to her so that he could inherit her family`swealth and businesses, as she was the only child of her parents.
She was amazed to see her kids getting along with a black man. She wanted to know Femi’s secret. This made her to invite Femi for an interview. Femi told her everything. He told her about his origin and background. He also narrated how the drug deal went bad in Germany because of greed. She lauded Femi for his honesty and then she promised to offer Femi a job since she had a business in Amsterdam. She also promised to take Femi back with her to Amsterdam so that he could continue his education. Femi thanked grandpa and grandma for their support and love. However, the challenge now,was how to inform Emily and Diana that he would soon be going with their mother back to Holland. They came to a decision never to inform them unless he was long gone.
Femi reached the Den Hague train station; Miss Christine had already alighted from train when it stopped at Amsterdam. He resumed school as usual and he did part-time jobs for Miss Christine. Although the payment was good, she alsoassisted Femi in his academic pursuit both financially and otherwise. After some few years of hard work, Femi graduated with a first class degree. Miss Christine and Femi became more than just friends. They hardly pass through a day without chatting or talking on phone. Their friendship began to grow into intimacy. She kindly sponsored Femi for his master degree. Femi soon forgot about the love that was shared between him and Rita. His newly found love has beclouded his thoughts and emotions. He only thought about Miss Christine. Miss Christine had it all. She was from a very richfamily. Shewas blessed with two adorable and lovely daughters whom their father never cared for. Miss Christine daughtersloved Femi very much.
